The pubic and bikini area is the most common site for ingrown hairs — and the most sensitive to handle incorrectly. This guide gives you a safe, dermatologist-informed protocol.

Pubic hair is coarser and curlier than hair elsewhere, which means it has a higher natural tendency to curl back into the follicle after cutting or removal. The surrounding skin is also thinner and more reactive than the legs or underarms — meaning inflammation is more pronounced, dark spots are more persistent, and incorrect technique causes more lasting damage.
The most important principle for this area: patience over force. The temptation to squeeze or pick is strong because bumps in this area are uncomfortable and visible. Resisting this instinct is the single most important thing you can do to prevent scarring.
Never squeeze, pop, or attempt to extract an ingrown hair in the pubic area with your fingers. Squeezing pushes bacteria deeper into the follicle and is the leading cause of permanent dark marks and scarring in this area.
Apply a warm, damp cloth to the area for 5–8 minutes twice daily. This softens the skin over the trapped hair and reduces inflammation. Do this for 2–3 days before any other intervention.
After the warm compress, pat dry and apply a salicylic acid treatment directly to the bump. The acid penetrates the follicle and dissolves the keratin plug trapping the hair. Apply twice daily for up to 10 days.
If after 7+ days the hair is visibly close to the surface, sterilise a needle with isopropyl alcohol. Insert parallel to the skin beneath the hair loop, lift gently. Do not dig, and do not pull the hair fully out of the follicle.
Apply a small amount of salicylic acid treatment to the site. Wear loose cotton underwear. Avoid friction from tight clothing for 24–48 hours.

Our top-rated product for the pubic and bikini area. Roll-on format delivers glycolic acid for ingrown prevention and kojic acid to fade dark spots precisely — without mess.

Apply from 48 hours after waxing through the full regrowth period. Prevents follicle blockage in the pubic area during the most vulnerable regrowth window.
If you shave the pubic area, switch to a fresh blade every 2–3 shaves and always shave in the direction of hair growth. Apply a chemical exfoliant (salicylic or glycolic acid) immediately after every shave on dry skin. Wear loose cotton underwear for the rest of the day — friction on freshly cut follicles is a direct cause of ingrown hairs in this area.
If you wax, exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment and begin a consistent exfoliation routine from day 3 after waxing through the full 4-week regrowth cycle.
If your bumps cluster slightly higher — across the bikini-line and groin area rather than the pubic skin itself — the same protocol applies, but pay extra attention to friction from waistbands and underwear elastic, which compounds the problem in that exact zone.
For permanent elimination, laser hair removal of the pubic area is highly effective and increasingly common. See our Laser & IPL guide for candidacy details.
