Clusters of ingrown hairs — multiple bumps grouped together in the same area — are common on the bikini line, beard neck area, and back of thighs. They need a different approach than treating a single bump.

Clumps of ingrown hairs typically form in areas that have two things in common: coarse or curly hair, and repeated friction or pressure from clothing. The bikini line, inner thighs, beard neck area, and back of arms are the most common sites. In these areas, multiple follicles are simultaneously blocked by a thick layer of dead skin cells, causing several hairs to be trapped at once.
In men with tightly coiled beard hair, the condition is called pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) — a chronic inflammatory response where curly hairs pierce back through the follicle wall repeatedly. Left untreated, PFB can cause persistent dark marks and scarring.
Never attempt to extract multiple ingrown hairs in one session. Treating more than 1–2 at a time causes significant skin trauma and dramatically increases infection risk. Chemical exfoliation is the correct approach for clusters — it clears the surface blockage across all follicles simultaneously without physical damage.
Apply a warm compress to the entire affected area for 10 minutes, twice daily, for 2–3 days. This softens the skin across all blocked follicles simultaneously.
Apply a 2% salicylic acid product across the entire cluster area — not just individual bumps. The salicylic acid penetrates all affected follicles at once, dissolving keratin buildup from the inside. Continue for 7–10 days.
After 48 hours of chemical treatment, add a gentle physical exfoliant — an exfoliating mitt or soft washcloth — to remove the loosened dead skin layer from the surface. This allows the trapped hairs to break through.
After 7+ days, if individual hairs are clearly visible beneath the surface, release them one at a time with a sterilised needle. Space sessions at least 48 hours apart to allow skin recovery.

Dual salicylic + glycolic acid formula. Apply twice daily across the entire cluster area. Designed specifically for widespread ingrown hair patterns.

Pure 2% salicylic acid. Use on a large cotton pad to treat widespread cluster areas efficiently. Especially effective on the beard neck area and bikini line.
Once the cluster clears, the most important preventive step is a consistent between-shave exfoliation routine. Chemical exfoliation 2–3 times per week keeps follicle openings clear so multiple hairs cannot become simultaneously trapped. Switching to a single-blade razor — or stopping shaving altogether in severe PFB cases — addresses the root cause.
For persistent clusters on the face or bikini line, laser hair removal is the only truly permanent solution. See our complete Laser & IPL guide for candidacy details.
